There is nothing quite like an informed electorate...

Yahoo! News - Poll: Americans Waver on New Medicare Law
The American public initially supports Medicare legislation providing help with prescription drugs, but that support fades when presented with criticism of the bill signed into law this year, a poll released Saturday suggests.

Asked whether they support "a Medicare bill which among other things provides prescription drug coverage and allows private companies to provide some services," almost two-thirds, 63 percent, said yes, according to the poll by the National Annenberg Election Survey.

When those polled were presented with opponents' arguments that the bill won't help seniors that much and cutting costs will eventually destroy Medicare, support faded. After hearings those arguments, only one in five of the total sample, 21 percent, supported it and another two in five said they were unsure.
Sad. Does anyone outside the blogshere read these bills before they pass? How many of you have contacted your member of Congress in the last year? Last 5 years? Ever? How many of you can name your Representative and Senators? It saddens me to see our representative republic treated with such apathy. It has been said that people eventually receive the government they deserve. It happened. Wake the hell up.

This isn't a good idea...

Yahoo! News - Kerry Says Dean Has No Chance Vs. Bush
"With a month to go before the New Hampshire primary, John Kerry made some of his strongest attacks yet against Democratic front-runner Howard Dean, portraying Dean as inexperienced in foreign policy, wrong-headed on the economy and a muddled thinker."
Let me say for the record that I am not a Dean lover. I think his following borders on organized religion. But I will say that Kerry made a bad choice. No candidate should be saying that any other candidate has no chance against Bush. They all have a good chance against Bush. Badmouthing one another to this extreme will only help Karl Rove win another term.

Don't cry. I'll be back soon...

I'm off to celebrate the birth of Santa. See you in a couple of days.

Let the over reaction begin...

Yahoo! News - Japan, Korea to Halt U.S. Beef Imports
Japan and South Korea (news - web sites) halted imports of U.S. beef on Wednesday after a cow in Washington state tested positive for mad cow disease, depriving American exporters of two of their largest overseas markets.

Singapore and Malaysia followed suit and authorities in other Asian nations were also deciding whether to invoke bans.
Good. More beef for me. It was one cow. One out of millions. You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than contracting BSE.

A Festivus for the Rest of Us...

It's a Festivus miracle! A donation has been made in your name to the Human Fund. We will now commence with the airing of the grievances.

1. Bush is a miserable failure.
2. Ann Coulter is an anorexic harpy.
3. Dan McCarney cannot coach and should be fired.
4. The Plame case is still open. Clinton was impeached for lesser offenses.
5. Kenneth Lay is still a free man.
6. Rush Limbaugh is a hypocritical junkie who will never see the inside of a court room.
7. Recount Recall Redistrict is an acceptable election strategy.
8. Criticizing tax cuts for the rich is considered Class Warfare.
9. Criticizing the war in Iraq is considered treason.
10. Fox News. Enough said.
11. The Scott Petersen. Let's talk about the real news please.
12. Not enough of you are clicking my Boot Bush link. Help the DNC kick Bush out of Al Gore's house.

Stay tuned for the Feats of Strength!

Reposting...

I'm reposting this entry because it was a popular link. I don't want it to get lost in the archive.

For those undecided voters...
This site will help you find the candidate who most closely matches your views.

Gen Wesley Clark was my highest match at 83%. No surprise there as he is my #1 choice for the nomination. Lieberman was my lowest match (46%) of the 9 Democrats. Bush was a 6% match. Surprisingly enough he wasn't at the bottom of the list. Howard Phillips of the Constitution Party came in at a whopping 0%. That guy must be totally insane.

Help me out...

Please email me if you know where I can get Maredsous 8 (my favorite Belgian beer) in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area. I've already tried John's Grocery.

Drop out...

Yahoo! News - Lieberman Asks Santa's Aid in N.H. Primary
Without revealing whether he'd been naughty or nice, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Lieberman climbed onto Santa's lap Sunday and revealed his holiday wish. He asked for, what else? "A better-than-expected finish in the New Hampshire primary."
Santa and a Lieberman nomination have something in common. They are both naive fantasies.

Yahoo! News - AP Poll: More See Bush Better on Economy

Yahoo! News - AP Poll: More See Bush Better on Economy

Dear Idiots,

It's a jobless recovery. That, in many ways, is worse than no recovery at all. Only Haliburton executives are better off now that they were four years ago.

Cyclones lose again...

My beloved Cyclone women's basketball team lost again today. My future wife, Anne O'Neil (I wish!), was the only player in double digits. Someone else had better step up soon.

Clark is the man for the job...

How can you not like this guy...Better not mess with Clark
Moments after praising his opponents in the Democratic presidential race as worthy running mates, Wesley Clark said, in no uncertain terms, how he would respond if they or anyone else criticized his patriotism or military record.

"I'll beat the s--- out of them," Clark told a questioner as he walked through the crowd after a town hall meeting Saturday. "I hope that's not on television," he added.

It was, live, on C-SPAN.

The campaign's traveling press secretary, Jamal Simmons, was with Clark at the time.

"If anyone tries to question Wes Clark's character, integrity or his commitment to this country or its security, they're going to be in the biggest fight they've ever had," Simmons said.
That man is a real leader. Can you imagine him in a debate with Gov. Bush? I don't care if he officially dropped out of the Iowa race. I'm going to caucus for him next month anyway.

Orange...

Didn't Bush just say that the world is a safer place now that Saddam is in custody? Another example of how little Bush's rhetoric has to do with reality.

Iowa is Paying a High Price..

Iowa Leads in Guard, Reserve Deaths
Iowa, Indiana and Pennsylvania lead the nation in the number of National Guard or Reserve members killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a Des Moines Sunday Register analysis shows.
...
Gov. Tom Vilsack has asked whether Iowa Guard troops are sharing a disproportionate burden in the global war on terrorism. But Maj. Gregory Hapgood Jr., a spokesman for the Iowa National Guard, said Iowa troops are being called to duty in large numbers because they have a nationwide reputation for being first-rate soldiers.
That's a high price to pay for being the best. Maybe that's why Gov. Bush was able to serve his Guard duty in Alabama. He simply wasn't good enough to be sent to die.
