Rumsfeld OK'd Prisoner Program...

Yahoo! News - Report: Rumsfeld OK'd Prisoner Program
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the expansion of a secret program that encouraged physical coercion and sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners to obtain intelligence about the growing insurgency in Iraq, The New Yorker reported Saturday.
...
The story, written by reporter Seymour Hersh, said Rumsfeld decided to expand the program last year, broadening a Pentagon operation from the hunt for al-Qaida in Afghanistan (news - web sites) to interrogation of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad.
...
The program got approval from President Bush's national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, and Bush was informed of its existence, the officials told Hersh.
So it was just a couple of low ranking soldiers acting on their own.

Right.

Rumsfeld ordered it and Bush knew. That means Rumsfeld lied to Congress last week during his sworn testimony to the House and Senate. That's perjury and we all know how much Republicans hate perjury. I expect the House members who voted to impeach Clinton to draw up orders for Rumsfeld. Rule of law! Rule of law!

The Shame of Iowa...

Representative Steve King, Idiot Republican from Iowa's 5th district thinks the Iraqi torture is little more than hazing.
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa said Thursday that Iraqi prisoner abuse amounted to little more than "hazing" and called for Democrats to stop criticizing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
...
King said in a written statement that the abuse cannot compare to what Iraqi insurgents have done to Americans. "The dismembered and charred corpses of American contractors dangling over the Euphrates River in comparison to the abuse committed by a few soldiers at Abu Ghraib are like the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer compared to those of Heidi Fleiss," said King.
Steve King's standards of decency are interesting. You only have to act slightly better than a serial killer or a whore to be okey-dokey in his book. That's a pretty tough standard there, Stevie Boy.

Gene Blanshan is King's opponent in the upcoming election. Show him some love.

Randomness

I started a new job today. I don't feel like talking about it.

Better Angels is now blogrolled under the More Liberal Scum. She's doing fine work exposing the hack Barbara Bradley Hagerty.

Bush's numbers are in the crapper. Kerry can sit back and save the precious $. It's going to be a wild ride this summer.

Adult Swim will probably drop the hilarious "Stabbed with a knife" promo after yesterday's awful event.

I'm posting at Atrios a lot lately. Much more than usual.

This post reads like a Larry King USA Today column. I'd better stop before I start wearing suspenders and collecting ex-wives.

Good News for People Who Love Bad News...

Shit Meets Fan

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - A video posted Tuesday on an Islamic militant Web site appeared to show a group affiliated with al-Qaida beheading an American in Iraq, saying the death was revenge for the prisoner-abuse scandal.

The video showed five men wearing headscarves and black ski masks, standing over a bound man in an orange jumpsuit who identified himself as an American from Philadelphia.

After reading a statement, the men were seen pulling the man to his side and cutting off his head with a large knife. They then held the head out before the camera.
It's going to get a whole lot worse.

Barbara Bradley Hagerty...

Biblio at Better Angels has compiled her research on NPR's religion reporter Barbara Bradley Hagerty.
More troubling still is [Hagerty's] association with Howard Ahmanson's Fieldstead and Co. and Fieldstead Foundation. Ahmanson is a California millionaire who uses his trust fund to finance right-wing Christian, anti-gay, anti-evolution groups and politicians. He was previously associated with Christian Reconstructionism, which advocates a Biblically-based government for the U.S.
A reporter with a clearly fundamentalist agenda is reporting on religion without disclosing her conflicts of interest. Biblio provides a link to NPR's ombudsman. You know what to do.

The Political Compass...

If you haven't already, I recommend you find where you belong on The Political Compass. I am Economic Left/Right: -6.38 and Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.49 which places me firmly in the Libertarian Left. That puts me in the fine company of individuals such as Nelson Mandela, Howard Zinn, The Dalai Lama, George Orwell, Al Franken, and the lovely Ms. Naomi Klein (no sexism implied - I just think she's hot). It also means that I am the exact opposite of Bush and Ariel Sharon. I'd say that's an accurate assessment.

Give it a shot and post your results in the comments.

Decisions...

I can't decide who pisses me off more. Is it the Hannitized conservatives who can't admit a single mistake? Or is it the Nader purists who scream that Kerry is Bush-lite.

The Naderites have my vote this week. Anyone who frequents the Atrios comments has seen my rage.

Blogger made some changes. Things might be screwy for a few days.

Screw their new comments function. I think I'll stick to haloscan.
